The Sweet 60s Are Making A Comeback This A/W
It’s official. The 60s made a major comeback in almost all fashion weeks across the world, and nowhere was their presence made more felt than in the Los Angeles Fashion Week. You could see floral prints, polka dots and bold colours making headway, with models sashaying down the catwalk in caftans, pink mini dresses and long, ladylike gloves, over-sized goggles and big hair dos. However, this year it was a 60s with a twist – there was a lot, and we mean, a LOT of colour.
Who can forget the glamour and charm that actresses like Twiggy and Audrey Hepburn brought to the world of cinema and fashion? Taking inspiration from them, designers Calvin Klein, BCBG Max Azria and Michael Kors made use of a lot of soft layering and assorted prints, which were incidentally the highlights of their 2015 A/W collections.
The 60s did make a come-back in 2011, but back then, they were more of an accent and less of a fashion trend. Not a lot of importance was given to it but since then, we’ve witnessed a slow and steady evolution of the 60s trends. Right from folk to mod to sex kitten to pop colours – 2015 was all about rediscovering the playful elements of the 60s.
One designer who made waves with his work was Jonathan Saunders, whose 60s’ inspired collection was presented in the form of colour blocking and psychedelic prints, which were accompanied with high necklines, long sleeves and A-line silhouettes. All his models were tight boots, which gave off quite a sensuous feel to all his ensembles.
Orla Kiely, on the other hand, experimented with bright colours, the most prominent of which were beige, green, custard yellow, peachy pink and cream. Checked and collared dresses, prim pinafores and high-neck blouses – that was all her collection was about.
Now another fashion statement which stood out in almost all runways was the over-the-knee boots. Here is one 60s trend which is a must have for the A/W 2015, because not only do they look extremely chic and stylish, they provide ample warmth for you during chilly winters. Invest in a basic black coloured pair if you’re unsure of experimenting with styles and colours. Be sure not to opt for leather boots as they are extremely expensive and very high on maintenance. For those who want to be bold and unapologetic this season, try velvet over-the-knee boots. Wear them with jeans or pair them with dresses – the possibilities are endless.
Unfortunately for curvy lasses, the 60s fashions was aimed at thin and skinny white women. So A-lines are something you should completely stay away from. But don’t let that deter you – wear bright colours, turtlenecks, short hemlines, high-waisted trousers, glitzy embellishments, and over-the knees-boots to bring out your inner ’60s sex kitten!
