Ask any fashionista and they’ll tell you that when in doubt, it’s best to just stick to the classics. Something about age old, tried and tested fashion staples screaming that they’ll never fail you. Look at the ever evolving color palettes in the fashion arena itself. The recent years have seen designers and clothing brand giants hail everything from pastels to fluorescent’s and even neons as the next best thing, but when the hype dies out, everyone is back seeking solace in the warm wrap of ever reliable hues of whites, blues, blacks and greys. Sounds familiar?
When it comes to neutral colors, it all boils down to how you juggle the colors at hand and come up with distinct looks to impress with. Here are some of the model color combinations that will do justice to any kind of occasion.
Monochrome: Nothing like a hark back to traditional dressing with the evergreen color combination of black and white. Striped dresses and jersey skirts with black and white stripes have captured every fashion loving girl’s imagination at the moment. Best part is that you can flaunt this duo in your quintessential formal wear or include them in Indian silhouettes like saris and churidars and still come out looking stylish as ever. Global fashion giant Louis Vuitton had a number of celebrities step out in monochrome shift dresses a few seasons back and the trend has lingered on since. Back home, young and peppy designer Masaba Gupta, among others introduced a line of Indian and western silhouettes in black and white prints and boy did they fly off the shelves!
White and Blue: A color combination that needs no introduction whatsoever, but we’ll do a quick brush up anyway. Think icy blue denims and a crisp white shirt or a cool and comfortable white tee… makes you want to reach out for your glares and run out in the sun already, right? A summer staple, you just can’t go wrong with blue denims and a white top. If it’s a beach or a yacht outing, you can alternatively opt for fitted white linen pants and a crisp cool blue top. Finish off the look with a raffia hat and an over sized tote.
Navy and Grey: What happens when you try to unite two of the most authoritative colours in the fashion dictionary in one silhouette? Well, you get an outfit that is totally awesome and one that retains all its dominance. This is particularly true for office wear. Invest in well-fitted blazers, pencil skirts and blouses in these two key colours and you can mix and match to create new looks all the time. Grey skirt and pale grey shirt teamed with a navy blue blazer or a navy skirt combined with a grey shirt and blazer… the combinations are simply endless, making each one more flattering than the other.
While we are all for keeping up with trends and colours of the season, we can vouch for the fact that the classics will stand the test of time. So, it makes complete sense to treasure outfits in neutrals.
