Sarees, Gowns Or Both?
Both are classics and both are trends which have evolved and changed with time. One can be categorized as traditional and one can be put under the ‘contemporary’ bracket. Both are preferred by women for more formal occasions. Yes we are talking about the ever growing debate between “Sarees and Gowns? Or both?”
Both can make you look like a goddess or easily break your personality. Both require oodles of fabric and the type makes all the difference.
Saree
Saree has always been touted as the more flattering and the sexier version of a gown especially for Indian ladies thanks to our full figure. Sarees make us look elegant and chic without too much effort. When worn the right way, sarees give you the much needed confidence and show you a different side of yourself. (Ms. Sonam Kapoor at Cannes, anyone?) However, if draped in an unflattering way, you can be averse to this style for the rest of your life. Thanks to media and awareness in our lives and with our film industry reaching new heights, sarees are now easily customizable with different kinds of blouses be it the halter top, the tube blouse, the traditional half sleeved blouse or bikini top blouse. But it is not only celebrities who face this dilemma day in and day out. We tend to face it whilst getting ready for those uber formal cocktail parties, those black tie events or wedding functions. With sarees one can play around with how much skin to show and are definitely a head turner.
Gown
Gowns are the easy-to-wear options for formal events. They are the best for the lady who is not comfortable handling too much fabric of a saree. With our nation in the international eyes and with our ladies gaining popularity in the world platform, it is no surprise that they opt to wear gowns to associate themselves more with the western crowd and be easily accepted. Sure being different is the key, but who says you cannot make waves in a gown- a western world’s staple? With more and more women joining the fitness bandwagon, gowns look gorgeous on us and why shouldn’t we wear them? If we get a chance to not wear something traditional, why shouldn’t we embrace something new and be different, after all?
Saree Gowns
But what happens if you want to wear both for the same evening and are indecisive of your preference? The fashion designers heard your plea and fast forward to today and we have the saree gown! But would you believe the first ever recorded saree gown at least in our memory was not worn by an Indian but by the Late Princess Diana? The trend simply faded away but was brought back by Paris Hilton during her trip to India for her brand launch when she wore a pink version. From then on it was all uphill with international and national fashionistas wearing this trend enthusiastically. Be it your love for sarees or your love for gowns this trend takes care of both your wishes while keeping it slightly unique.
