Turning The Ramp Into Hues Of Wine

Marsala, the colour of the month, can be said to be a throwback to the unfashionable 80s of Hollywood. Needless to say, there’s a faction of the fashion industry that’s not very happy with the colour. But then there’s the other faction of the industry which couldn’t be more excited with Marsala. And rightly so – the colour gives designers the added advantage to experiment with an entire palette of colours in a deep red that just happens, is able to flatter every single skin tone across the globe!

When it comes to fashion in India, it’s the Bollywood actresses that lead the way. For popularizing the colour Marsala, the story was the same. The colour took our industry by storm and A-listers like Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor were seen sashaying down ramps and attending various high-end fashion events in Marsala ensembles for designers like Anju Modi and Sabyasachi Mukherjee. The colour became an instant hit among Indian designers because of the way it beautifully compliments the Indian skin tone.

Designer Anupama Dayal too made a lot of use of Marsala, especially its hues of brown and pinks. They were plastered all over her Autumn-Winter 2015 collection, and the innovative ways in which she chose the colour combinations was a sight for sore eyes. Not to mention her bold and daring silhouettes – a hot pink shirt with almond coloured box-pleat trousers, topped off with Turkish carnations! Other designers who made the presence of Marsala felt on the ramp included Kiran Uttam Ghosh, Nishka Lulla and Anju Modi.

In the world if international fashion, the best example we can give you is that of the Fall 2015 collection of designer Zac Posen. The designer went out of his way to show incorporate all the shades of Marsala that you can think of, and more! And the best part was that his creations were not restricted to just models doing catwalks on the ramp – several A-list Hollywood fashionistas were photographed in his gorgeous ensembles, including Rihanna and Katie Holmes.

Then there was the 2015 Haute Couture Spring-Summer of Valentino’s collection in the world’s fashion capital – Paris. Here, the designer showcased his collections for both men and women, and we must admit his collection of menswear was as gorgeous, if not more, as the women’s capes and evening gowns.

It doesn’t matter if you like Marsala – the fact remains that it has become one of the most popular colours chosen by Pantone till date. What works in its favour is how very versatile the colour is, and we’re not just talking about clothes. You can opt for a mono-tone Marsala make-up (using various tones of it, if you want) on your eyes, lips and cheeks for a fashionable evening out. For those willing to experiment, the colour looks lovely when paired with either gold or black. This means you can keep your makeup muted and wear flashy gold accessories, or keep your makeup loud and wear minimal to no accessories. The list is endless – it’s ultimately up to you how you want to wear Marsala this season!
